Pushkar is acclaimed to be the only place in the world
to have temple dedicated to lord Brahma.
Legend has it that Brahma was in search of a suitable place
to perform a Vedic Yagya (sacrifice).
|
| While he was contemplating, a lotus fell from his hand and
water sprouted from three places. One of them was pushkar and
Brahma decided to perform his Yagya here. |
| The month of "Kartik Purnima" (full moon in Oct.
- Nov.) is considered auspicious by the Hindus to take a dip
in the holy lake. The ancient town is transformed magically
into a gigantic fair ground during those four days of "Kartic
Purnima". |
|
The highlight of the fair is the trading
of camels. One gets to see Camels in thousands dressed up,
paraded bought and sold here.
Camel-traders and villagers from miles away converge to Pushkar
with their humped beasts. Over 25,000 camels (and that's on
the conservative side) are traded, making this the world's
largest camel fair.

Camp Thar organizes an exclusive camp at the Pushkar
Fair, with camel rides to the fair grounds. Evenings at the
camp are a festivity of music and dance, complete with camp
fires, local folk performers, and puppet shows.
